10. Them
The series is set in 1953. Them follows a black family who, during the Second Great Migration, move from North Carolina to an all-white neighborhood in Los Angeles. The family’s idyllic home gradually becomes an epicenter of evil, neighborly and otherworldly forces that threaten to haunt, ravage, and destroy them.
Them is a fantastic series that explores themes of race, gender, family expectations, and supernatural forces. It feels like a show Jordan Peele would have created, and that’s the highest compliment possible.
9. The Lord of the Rings: Rings of Power
The series’ plot takes place thousands of years before the events of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, and is based on author JRR Tolkien’s history of Middle-earth.
“The story begins in a time of relative peace and covers all the major events of the Second Age of Middle-earth: the creation of the Rings of Power, the rise of the Dark Lord Sauron, the fall of the island kingdom of Númenor, and the last alliance between Elves and Men.”
The Lord of the Rings: Rings of Power is an excellent prequel to the film trilogies based on Tolkien’s most famous works. It expands on much of the story from The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit films while still being a work of art in its own right.
8. The Horror of Dolores Roach
The series’ plot is as follows: “Dolores Roach is released from an unjust 16-year prison sentence and returns to a now-gentrified Washington Heights neighborhood. She reunites with an old stoner friend, Luis, who lets her live and work as a masseuse in the basement of his empanada shop. When the promise of her newfound stability is threatened, she must go to any lengths to survive.”
Dolores Roach’s horror may not be based on a true story, but it’s the perfect show for anyone obsessed with the murderous musical Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street.
7. Sneaky Pete
The plot of the series is as follows: “Marius, a con man, is released from prison and finds himself hunted by the vicious gangster he once robbed. With nowhere else to go, he hides from his past by assuming the identity of his cellmate, Pete, and then “reunites” with Pete’s estranged family, who have no reason to suspect that he is not their long-lost loved one.”
Sneaky Pete is a thrilling experience with a ton of twists and turns that will keep you guessing who you should be rooting for at all times.
6. Good omens
The series’ plot takes place in 2018. It follows the demon Crowley and the angel Aziraphale, long-time acquaintances who have grown accustomed to each other’s company and a pleasant life on Earth as representatives of Heaven and Hell, and who have agreed not to let the conflict between their camps prevent their friendship.
“When they are told that Armageddon is about to occur – the final battle between heaven and hell – they join together to prevent the coming of the Antichrist and the end of the pleasant existence they enjoy on earth.”
Good Omens features fantastic performances and makes us wonder if things like Heaven and Hell are really black and white entities.
5. The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel
The plot of the series reads: “In 1958 New York City, Miriam “Midge” Maisel, a wealthy Jewish-American housewife, embarks on a career as a stand-up comedian after her husband Joel, an untalented amateur comic, abruptly leaves her following his dismal set at the Gaslight Café.
“Drunk and dejected, Midge returns to the Gaslight in her nightgown and, in a bawdy, impromptu number, expresses her predicament before being arrested for indecent exposure. Midge meets famed comic Lenny Bruce when he is arrested that same night for using profanity in his act. Gaslight manager Susie Myerson, recognizing Midge’s raw talent, gives her lessons in improvisational comedy.”
The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel is an interesting look at women in comedy and how far someone is willing to go to achieve their dreams, even if it’s at the expense of everyone around them.
4. Daisy Jones and the Six
The series’ plot is as follows: “The series follows a rock band in the 1970s, from their rise in the Los Angeles music scene to becoming one of the most famous bands in the world, and explores why they broke up at the height of their success.”
Daisy Jones & the Six is based on the book of the same name written by Taylor Jenkins Reid, who revealed that part of the novel was inspired by her experience growing up watching Fleetwood Mac performances on television.
3. Flea bag
The plot of the series is as follows: “The angry, grief-stricken woman tries to heal while rejecting anyone who tries to help her, but Fleabag continues to maintain her bravado through it all.”
Fleabag is an adaptation of Phoebe Waller-Bridge’s one-woman play of the same name which premiered at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe in 2013. The idea for the character Fleabag was inspired by a challenge from one of Waller-Bridge’s friends, who asked her to create a sketch for a 10-minute segment at a comedy storytelling evening.
2. Invincible
The plot of the series is as follows: “Mark Grayson is a seemingly normal teenager, except that his father, Nolan, is the most powerful superhero on the planet, and shortly after his seventeenth birthday, Mark begins to develop his own powers and learns to use them with his father’s help.”
Invincible is considered one of the best superhero series ever made because it gives fans a new look at superhero culture, leading to one of the best plot twists in television history.
1. The boys
The series’ plot takes place in a universe where individuals with superpowers are recognized as heroes by the general public and work for a powerful corporation known as Vought International which markets and monetizes them.
“Aside from their heroic personas, most are corrupt and selfish. The series focuses primarily on two groups: the Seven, Vought’s main superhero team, and the Boys, vigilantes who seek to bring down Vought and its corrupt superheroes.”
Much like Invincible, fans love The Boys because it’s a darker, more realistic depiction of what life would be like if superheroes were real. It’s also incredibly gory and hilarious, which isn’t easy to pull off, but they do it with ease.
